After the Machine Shop Clean, Sand Blast, Ckeck for cracks, Line Bore , Resurface Block, Install Cam Bushings and Bore Block .40 over. We are just about ready to install parts, but don't forget to retap your Cylinder Head Holes and Bolts. For some reason most Machine Shops fell to do this. Doing so may save you a blown Head Gasket down the road.

After having the Crankshaft grind to .10 over. Keep it covered and standing upright. The only time you will lay it down is inside of the Engine Block. I like to check my Crankshaft at every 90 degree angle with the proper plastic gage for the Main Bearings setting.

As good as the Machine Shop is that I use, I like to double check behind them. Always follow a good service manual and check your readings. A good Machine Shop like I use will stamp your Crankshaft such as .10M and .10R. That is great, but I still have a habit of checking my clearance with the proper plastic gage.
After installing the Crankshaft. Install your Rear Main Seal.
Take your time placing your Piston Rings on. Make sure that All Rings are offset.
Again take your sweet time mounting in your Pistons. If the Piston stop, do not force it. Stop and look for a out of place loose Piston Ring. Correct the Ring and continue installing. Watch out for your Crankshaft.
If you are not working on your Engine Block make sure that it is completely covered at all times.

FORD 351- CLEVELAND OVERHAUL
REASON FOR OVERHAUL - CAM LIFERS NOISE AND LOW INTAKE VAC.
|
After removing engine from the vehicle. The Engine must be dissemble down to the bare block. Starting with the Flywheel, Water Pump, Fuel Pump, Front Damper, Timing Chain or Gear Cover , Oil Pan and Oil Pump. Once most of the oil has drained. Remove the Distributer and Intake, the Carburetor should have already been removed before removing the engine from the vehicle.Next remove both Cyd Heads, Cam Lifters and the Cam Shaft. By now your shop floor will most likely have a mess of oil and antifreeze. If you are dissembling on the floor and not a engine stand . By now you should be able to sit the engine up on it's back side, the side where the Flywheel is mounted by placing a thin block of wood on both outer ends. This will allow you to disconnect the Connecting Rod Bolts and turn the Crankshaft as needed. After dissemble we discover that the Cam shaft and Lifters was worn completely out. The Crankshaft was behind turning. And the Left Side Cyd Head had (3) cracks, also the Left Side Exhaust Manifold was cracked into. The good news is all other parts and Cyd Walls was good.Over to your left you can see the Engine Kit and all other new parts that are needed for a proper Engine Rebuild. The block here has just come back from the machine shop, which was cleaned out, checked for cracks. The Cyd Walls honed out and New Freeze plugs was installed.

i. You have to know your Piston size and Crankshaft size in order to receive the proper rebuild kit. On this engine we are going with .30 over on Pistons and a Standard size Crankshaft. 2. Follow your Service Manual. 3. Using Plastic Gauge may take a little time but it is very helpful in the long run. 4. Make sure All BOLTS ARE TORQUE DOWN PROPERLY. 5. At the in of the day, make sure that the engine block is wrapped or cover up from dirt and trash. 6. Use clean oil only when installing Pistons with New Rings, Main Bearings and Rod Bearings. 7 .Keep Cyd Heads in a seal box or wrapped up until ready to be installed. 8. If you purchase a new compete rebuild Cyd Head make sure that it is clean for all machine shop grind metal. 9. Allow Lifts to soak at least (2)days in clean oil before installing them into Engine.( This can save you a Headache up the road ahead).

One of our customers ask us if we would do a Inframe Overhaul instead of replacing the Engine. We are able to do that providing that the Crankshaft and Rear Main Bearing was not damage due to Coolant and Oil mixing. We believe in doing what is best for the customer which is saving you money. Here you will see what all is involve in a Inframe Overhaul on a Middle / Heavy Duty Diesel Engine.
